Where HCF Stand Today and the Future We Are Building Together

By Demetrius Johnson, Jr.
Founder, President & CEO, HCF

When I founded the HBCU Campaign Fund (HCF) thirteen years ago, the vision was simple but ambitious: to create an organization that would join forces as a champion for historically Black colleges and universities and later on Minority-Serving Institutions, and the students whose lives are transformed through higher education. What began as an idea fueled by God, passion and purpose has evolved into a educational advocacy organization that continues to amplify the voices of institutions and students who deserve to be seen, supported, and invested in.

Today, HCF stands as a recognized advocate in the higher education landscape. We have built a platform that not only raises awareness of the achievements, challenges, and needs of HBCUs and MSIs, but also works to provide scholarships, institutional support, advocacy, and opportunities that empower students and strengthen campuses. Through our initiative, programs, media platforms, and partnerships, we have remained committed to ensuring that HBCUs continue to receive the recognition and investment they deserve. And without our supporters who join us in advocating, it would not be possible.

Our work has never been limited to social media or “a page.” We have become a voice in critical conversations affecting higher education, educational equity, public policy, workforce development, student success, and institutional sustainability. Whether advocating for federal legislation such as the IGNITE HBCU Excellence Act, supporting institutions facing financial challenges, celebrating leadership excellence, or connecting students with opportunities through programs like the Annual HBCU Football and Recruitment Tour, HCF has consistently demonstrated that advocacy and action must go hand in hand.

Yes, despite the progress made, the work is far from complete. We have a long way to go ahead of us.

We operate in a time when higher education faces significant challenges. HBCUs continue to be underfunded compared to their peers, students continue to encounter financial barriers, and institutions must navigate an increasingly competitive and evolving educational environment. These realities demand organizations willing to innovate, collaborate, and lead with purpose.

The next chapter for HCF will be defined by growth, innovation, and impact. We are committed to expanding scholarship opportunities, strengthening our institutional partnerships, increasing research and workforce development initiatives and creating more pathways that connect students with educational and professional opportunities. Achieving these goals, however, requires resources, investment, and the continued support of those who believe in the transformative power of higher education. As we move forward, we will remain steadfast in leveraging our advocacy to ensure that HBCUs and MSIs remain at the forefront of national conversations surrounding education, economic mobility, and workforce readiness.

We also envision a stronger role in supporting institutional advancement and capacity-building efforts. As HBCUs continue to adapt to emerging industries and workforce demands, organizations like HCF must help bridge the gap between opportunity and access. This includes fostering partnerships with corporations, foundations, government agencies, and community stakeholders who recognize the value and significance of investing in HBCUs and in our advocacy work.

Every scholarship awarded, every partnership established, every advocacy campaign launched, and every institution support is ultimately about ensuring that students have the resources and opportunities necessary to succeed. The future leaders of our nation are being educated on HBCU and MSI campuses today. Our responsibility is to help ensure they have every opportunities to thrive.

As we look ahead, I am reminded of the words of Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, who said: “Knowledge is the prime need of the hour.” Those words continue to guide our mission. The road ahead will require collaboration, vision and sustained investment. But if the past decade has taught us anything, it is that when we come together to support higher education, there is no limit to what can be achieved.

HCF is not simply reflecting on where we have been. We are focused on where we are going.

And the future is bright.

Thank you for you standing with us, believing in our work, and supporting our mission. Your continued partnership makes our efforts possible, and we are grateful for your commitment to helping us build a stronger future for HBCUs and the students they serve.
