The HBCU Campaign Fund (HCF) joins the HBCU community in expressing gratitude to President Trump, Secretary McMahon and the Trump administration for announcing plans to provide $174 million additional funding to strengthen and support the nation’s historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs).
Announced on September 22, 2026, during the HBCU Summit at the White House, the investment represents an important recognition of the enduring contributions and national significance of HBCUs. The Department of Education stated that the new funding builds upon a $438 million one-time investment announced in 2025, bringing the total amount of newly directed funding announced for HBCUs during fiscal years 2025 and 2026 to more than $612 million.
“HCF applauds this significant investment in our nation’s HBCUs and the students they serve. Federal investments in HBCUs are investments in students, communities, workforce development, innovation, and the future of our nation. As advocates and supporters of HBCUs, we recognize the important of ensuring these institutions have the resources necessary to fulfill their missions and continue creating opportunities for generations to come.”
— Demetrius Johnson, Jr., Founder, President & CEO, HCF
HCF recognizes that while this additional funding represents a meaningful step in supporting HBCUs, continued attention and sustained investment remain essential to the long-term strength and success of these institutions. HBCUs continue to face a range of challenges and opportunities that require collaboration among federal and state policymakers, institutional leaders, alumni, philanthropic organizations, corporate partners, and advocates.
HCF remains committed to advocating for students and institutions, supporting educational opportunity, and advancing the continued growth, sustainability, and excellence of HBCUs and other minority-serving institutions.
