HCF Mourns the Passing of NCAT Chancellor Emeritus Edward B. Fort

The HBCU Campaign Fund (HCF) joins the higher education and broader HBCU community in mourning the passing of Chancellor Emeritus Dr. Edward B. Fort, a transformational educator, visionary leader, and giant in higher education.

Dr. Fort, who passed away August 9 at the age of 94, served as North Carolina A&T’s eighth chancellor for 17 years, leading the university through a pivotal period of growth and advancement. Under his leadership, A&T expanded its academic offerings, launched its first doctoral programs, strengthened its engineering and technology programs, and significantly expanded its physical and research infrastructure. He continued serving the university as chancellor emeritus and professor of educational leadership, dedicating more than four decades of his life to A&T.

“Dr. Fort represented the very best of HBCU leadership. His vision, courage, and commitment to academic excellence helped shape North Carolina A&T into the institution it is today, while his influence reached far beyond Greensboro and touched the entire HBCU community. Leaders like Dr. Fort remind us that true leadership is measured not only by what you accomplishe during your tenure, but by the opportunities, institutions, and generations you leave stronger than you found them. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, the Aggie Nation, and all who were blessed by his remarkable life and service. His legacy will continue to live through the students, scholars, and leaders who stand on the foundation he helped build.”

— Demetrius Johnson, Jr., Founder, President & CEO, HCF

His impact, however, extended far beyond buildings, programs, and institutional accomplishments. Dr. Fort understood the transformative power of HBCUs and helped positions NCAT as a nationally respected institution for research, innovation, and academic excellence.

HCF extends our deepest condolences to Dr. Fort’s family, the Aggie community, his former colleagues, students, and the many lives he touched throughout his remarkable career. His legacy reminds us that great leaders do more than lead institutions — they build foundations upon which future generations can stand.

We honor Dr. Fort for his extraordinary service to NCAT, may his legacy continue to inspire those committed to advancing educational excellence and opportunity.
