The HBCU Campaign Fund (HCF) joins the nation and the historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) community in mourning the passing of Dr. Mary Evan Sias, a trailblazing educator, transformational leader, and steadfast advocate for HBCUs whose impact will be forever felt across higher education.
Dr. Sias devoted her life to advancing educational opportunity, strengthening institutions, and empowering generations of students through leadership grounded in excellence, service, and integrity. Her impact across the HBCU landscape will forever be remembered through her transformational leadership as president of Kentucky State University, interim president of Texas Southern University, and her continued service to higher education organizations and initiatives dedicated to developing future leaders.
“Dr. Sias was the true “Madam President” during her tenure at Kentucky State University, exemplifying a level of leadership and service that was unmatched. She dedicated her life to opening doors of opportunity for generations of students and strengthening the mission of HBCUs across the nation. Her leadership, grace, and commitment to the educational excellence leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire leaders and future generations.”
— said Demetrius Johnson, Jr., Founder, President and CEO, HCF
Throughout her career, Dr. Sias championed innovation, student success, institutional growth, and the enduring mission of HBCUs. Her legacy reflects the very spirit of servant leadership that has sustained HBCUs and will continue for generations.
On behalf of HCF, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of Dr. Sias, her colleagues, former students, and all who were impacted by her life and leadership. As we honor her legacy, we are reminded that the work of strengthening HBCUs and uplifting future generations must continue with the same courage, vision, and dedication that Dr. Sias exemplified throughout her life.
May she rest in power and everlasting peace.
