The HBCU Campaign Fund (HCF) extends its sincere appreciation to the U.S. Department of Education for officially proclaiming April as National Community College Month.
This important recognition underscores the vital role community colleges play as engines of economic growth, workforce development, and educational access across the nation. For more than a century, community colleges have opened doors of opportunity—empowering millions of students with the skills, credentials, and pathways needed to succeed in today’s evolving economy.
We commend DOE for elevating the significance of these institutions, which serve as critical bridges to higher education, career advancement, and lifelong learning; particularly, for underserved and underrepresented communities. The proclamation affirms a shared national commitment of strengthening talent pipelines, expanding access to affordable education, and preparing highly skilled workforce for the future.
As an organization dedicated to advancing educational equity and excellence among Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), HCF recognizes the powerful synergy between Historically Black Community Colleges (HBCCs) and HBCUs in creating inclusive pathways to achievement and economic mobility.
“As we celebrate National Community College Month, we applaud the DOE for recognizing the transformative impact of these institutions—including twelve Historically Black Community Colleges across the nation that have long served as vital gateways to opportunity. HBCCs and HBCUs share a powerful mission: expanding access, advancing equity, and preparing students to lead and thrive. This proclamation affirms the importance of continued advancement in these institutions that uplift communities and strengthen our nation’s future.”
— said Demetrius Johnson, Jr., Founder, President & CEO, HCF
We celebrate National Community College Month and stand in support of the continued investment, innovation, and collaboration that will uplift students, families, and communities nationwide.
