Philanthropist MacKenzie Scott has made another historic investment in a historically Black college and university (HBCU). Earlier this Month, Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) announced it received a $42 million gift—now the largest per-student donation among her recent contributions to HBCUs and nearly three times the amount she gave the institution in 2020.
“The HBCU Campaign Fund (HCF) extends our sincere appreciation to MacKenzie Scott for her extraordinary $42 million investment to Elizabeth City State University. This transformative gift—one of the largest in the institution’s history—reflects a powerful commitment to educational equity and the continued advancement of historically Black colleges and universities.
We celebrate this moment as a testament to the enduring value of HBCUs and the students they serve. Investment of this magnitude not only strengthen institutions but also expand opportunity, empower future leaders, and uplift communities for generations to come.
On behalf of HCF, we thank Ms. Scott for her continued belief in the mission, legacy, and future of HBCUs.”
