The HBCU Campaign Fund (HCF) acknowledges the Southern University System’s decision to make a leadership change involving System President Dennis Shields and is aware that his resignation will take effect on December 31st. We recognize Shields’ leadership in the role at Southern University and appreciate his contributions to advancing the institution’s mission, growth and student success.

In May 2025, the organization announced Shields as a recipient of The Ten Most Dominant HBCU Leaders of 2026 and ninth class honorees. This recognition highlights ten current chancellors, presidents, and sports-affiliated leaders serving at an HBCU or MSI. Although the criteria require that each honoree be serving in their role at the time the award is received, the committee has determined that Mr. Dennis Shields will remain among the ninth class of The Ten Most Dominant HBCU Leaders of 2026.

To this end, we commend Mr. Shields for his exceptional leadership and dedication to higher education, and we extend our best wishes for continued success in his future endeavors.
