”The Trump administration’s efforts to diminish the Department of Education’s ability to protect students, enforce civil rights, and support institutions that rely on federal resources carry serious consequences for the future of equitable education in this country. Policies that weaken federal oversight or reduce investment in education endanger the progress these institutions have achieved and risk deepening longstanding disparities.

A strong Department of Education is vital to maintaining accountability across higher education system—ensuring transparency in financial aid, monitoring accreditation, and protecting student from predatory or discriminatory practices. Reductions in the Department’s authority or operational capacity may limit its ability to enforce these safeguards, leaving vulnerable student populations at greater risk. Furthermore, federal programs that directly support HBCUs—such at Title III funding, research grants, student aid, and institutional capacity-building initiatives depend on stable and effective federal infrastructure.

We urge policymakers and the public to recognize the critical importance of maintaining a strong, fully functioning Department of Education—one equipped to ensure accountability, safeguard students’ rights, and provide meaningful support to the institutions that need it most. Preserving the integrity of the federal education system is essential to advancing equity and ensuring that all students, including those served by HBCUs, have access to the resources they need to succeed.”
