The HBCU Campaign Fund (HCF) joins other organizations nationwide in strongly condemning the latest actions by the Trump Administration dismantling the U.S. Department of Education, resulting layoffs and closure of office in several cities. HCF’s founder, President and CEO Demetrius Johnson Jr., releases the following statement:

“This is a disgrace to our country and to millions of students and families who would be affected by this action. The Trump Administration’s latest decision to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education and fire its workforce is an uncivil and unacceptable assault on Americans.”

“Eliminating half of the Department of Education is a serious concern for many education advocates, including our organization. Not only will this affect jobs, but it will also disrupt how financial student aid is monitored and disturbed to students. These actions will deprive millions of students of the opportunity for higher education.”

“The Department, which includes the Office of Civil Rights, ensures protections for all students, including children of color and students with disabilities. It also provides necessary funding to rural and low-income schools and student populations. This action will not only action compromise citizens of those groups, it will also impact our public historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and Minority-Serving Institutions, which serves a majority of low-income students that reply on these funds as an affordability option for schooling.”

“We stand with other organizations in the fight against injustice as we refuse to allow the Trump Administration to infringe upon the fundamental rights of every student and their families in America. Martin Luther King Jr., once said, “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly,” Johnson concluded.
