Transformative investment marks the largest single donation in Philander Smith’s 147-year history

The HBCU Campaign Fund (HCF) celebrates its hometown HBCU, Philander Smith University’s historic $19 million gift from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott. The University announced the gift on Friday during its homecoming festivities, marking the largest single contribution in its 147-year history.
The University states that the investment strengthens its ability to advance its mission of educating academically accomplished students who are grounded as advocates for social justice and determined to change the world for the better.

The unrestricted gift will give the Philander Smith flexibility to determine how best to invest the dollars for long-term impact. University leadership and the Board of Trustees will carefully steward this funds in alignment with the institution’s mission and strategic priorities.
The University plans to consider allocating funds to the following areas:
– Expanding student scholarships and financial aid
– Investing in faculty excellence and academic innovation
– Enhancing campus facilities and technology
– Strengthening the University’s endowment for future growth and stability
