David M. Carlisle, MD, PhD, President and CEO of the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science (CDU) and an alum of HCF’s Ten Most Dominant HBCU Leaders, has been elected to the National Academy of Medicine (NAM). HCF extends its congratulations to Dr. Carlisle on this prestigious achievement.

Election to the Academy is among the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine, recognizing individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service. Dr. Carlisle was recognized for successfully integrating three separate colleges (medicine, health sciences, and nursing) into a single university focused on social justice and health equity for underserved populations. He also skillfully led the University’s College of Medicine to achieve preliminary accreditation status as an independent four-year medical program, which welcomed its inaugural class in 2023.
“Being elected to the National Academy of Medicine is a profound honor. It reflects the shared dedication of the CDU community—our faculty, students, staff, alumni, and partners—-to advancing health equity and social justice. As CDU approaches its 60 anniversary, this milestone serves as both a celebration of our progress and a call to continue shaping a healthier, more equitable future.”
