Alabama Governor Kay Ivey has signed a proclamation officially designating October as HBCU Month in the state of Alabama. The proclamation highlights the importance of raising public awareness and celebrating the significant economic, cultural, and social contributions that Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) make to Alabama and around the United States.
This marks the fourth straight year that Governor Ivey signed a proclamation recognizing October as HBCU Month in Alabama. Additionally, she proclaimed April as Community College Month, honoring the state’s Historically Black Community Colleges.
“Our 14 HBCUs are a cornerstone of excellence, shaping leaders who strengthen our state and nation,” said Ivey. “Alabama is proud to celebrate their legacy and support the students who call these institutions home.”

Alabama is home to 14 HBCUs that HCF supports — the most of any state — including six institutions that are designated as Historically Black Community Colleges (HBCCs).
“Our HBCUs hold deep historical and educational significance, serving as cornerstone institutions that have shaped generations of leaders who contribute to the strength of Alabama and our nation. We are grateful to Governor Ivey for once again recognizing October as HBCU Month, honoring the 14 institutions in the state of Alabama that have upheld a legacy of academic excellence for decades,” said Demetrius Johnson, Jr., Founder, President & CEO, HCF. ” The pride and tradition of theses institutions endure, and we celebrate their continued success of producing outstanding doctors, lawyers, scientists, engineers, CEOs, and countless other professions who help drive progress in every field.”
“Alabama’s HBCUs occupy a unique and vital place in both the state’s heritage and the broader American story. We commend the dedicated faculty, staff, and administrators who support and serve the students who proudly call these campuses home,” Johnson continued.
