The HBCU Campaign Fund (HCF) joins the nation in mourning the tragedy that unfolded at Delta State University in Mississippi, and is calling for answers and a thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to the death of Demartravion “Trey” Reed.
“HCF joins the nation in mourning the tragic death of Demartravion “Trey” Reed. We are deeply saddened by this heartbreaking loss, which occurred in a state with long and painful history of racial injustice and violence against African Americans. Mississippi, a central backdrop of the Civil Rights Movement, remains a marked by past and present acts of racial terror — from the brutal murders of civil rights activists to systemic neglect of Black lives. Trey’s death is a painful reminder that far too often, Black lives are treated as if they hold no value. This must end. We stand in solidarity with Trey’s family and with all those demanding justice. Alongside other advocacy organizations, we call for immediate transparency, direct answers, and a full, independent investigation by local and state authorities. Accountability is not optional—concerns surrounding this tragedy must not be ignored or dismissed. Our hearts are with Trey’s loved ones during this unimaginable time. We stand with them, and we will not stay silent.”
