HCF Denounces the Administration’s Decision Not to Defend Federal Grant for Hispanic-Serving Institutions

Today, the HBCU Campaign Fund (HCF) strongly denounces the Trump Administration’s failure to defend a longstanding federal grant program that supports students at Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs). Among these institutions is St. Philip’s College—the only federal designated college in the nation recognized as both a historically Black college (HBC) and a Hispanic-serving institution (HSI)—which stands to be disproportionately affected by this decision.

HCF’s Founder, President & CEO Demetrius Johnson, Jr., issued the following statement:

“HCF joins other allies and supporters in condemning the Trump Administration on this decision. This decision came as no surprise, as the nation continues to experience setbacks in the areas of diversity, equity, and inclusion, along with ongoing efforts to dismantle the DOE. This move is a clear attempt to block the will of the people from accessing government funding meant to help cover the rising costs of obtaining an affordable eduction. Now more than ever, we must stand together to protect our rights—rights that are not unconstitutional, unlike actions taken by the President and his administration, which represents an unjust use of power against the interests of the American people. The Department of Justice must reverse its decision and uphold the funding that plays a vital role ensuring access to education for all citizens.”

HCF proudly advocates for institutions like SPC, which holds the designated of being both a HBCU and a HSI. Historically, SPC has received HSI grant funding through the DOE in recognition of its designation and the diverse student population it serves. These grants are critical in helping the college enhance its academic programs, facilities, and student services—particularly for Hispanic and other underrepresented students.

The organization will continue to engage with federal lawmakers to advocate for funding that impacts our esteemed institutions.
