HCF Celebrates Magic Johnson’s $500,000 Pledge to Xavier University of Louisiana in honor of President Emeritus Dr. Norman C. Francis

Xavier University of Louisiana raised more than $2 million at its Centennial Gala, presented by Ochsner Health on May 8. The event was hosted as part of the university’s 100th-anniversary fête to pay homage to a century of excellence and community impact, the event honored the historic legacy and ongoing contributions of the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament and President Emeritus Dr. Norman C. Francis.

One of the most notable contributions to the university came from NBA legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson, who pledged $500,000 to Xavier in honor of Norman C. Francis (‘52), who went on to lead the University for 47 years as president. The HBCU Campaign Fund (HCF) expresses its gratitude to Magic Johnson for his unwavering contributions to HBCUs and its students.

“HBCUs hold significant legacies and historical importance, serving as pivotal institutions that shape the lives of students who embark on their academic journeys on their campuses for generations,” said Demetrius Johnson, Jr., founder, President & CEO, HCF. “Saint Katharine Drexel’s visionary leadership and unwavering dedication laid the foundation for Xavier University, and we are deeply grateful for her enduring legacy. Moreover, Magic Johnson’s generous gift ensures that more students have access to the necessary resources and opportunities to thrive and achieve a brighter future. All proceeds from the gala will support student scholarships at Xavier University.
