On Wednesday, Jackson State University President Dr. Marcus Thompson resigned from his position, effective immediately. As the HBCU Campaign Fund (HCF), we deeply regret this decision. We have valued his leadership since he was hired in 2023, and regardless of the reason behind this decision, we wish Dr. and Mrs. Thompson the best of luck in their future endeavors. We also join the JSU National Alumni Association, Inc., in affirming our full support for Interim President Dr. Denise Jones Gregory and the current leadership team.
As reported in the media, Dr. Thompson’s resignation occurs amidst a concerning trend of three presidents leaving JSU in the past seven years. I express my utmost concern about the selection process of IHL for the president position at JSU. When choosing a university leader, the campus shareholders and the surrounding community shall have a right to provide input and confidence in the individual selected.
I strongly urge IHL to conduct a more transparent and efficient selection process for the next leader of JSU and in the future. The decision-making process should involve students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community leaders. The ideal candidate should align with JSU’s mission and demonstrate a commitment to long-term service to the role and the institution. Furthermore, the ideal candidate should embody the Tiger spirit of dedication, efficiency, dignity, vision, and loyalty. Their strategic plan should outline the future of JSU internally and financially.
I may not be a graduate of JSU, but I am fellow SWAC who strongly supports Thee I Love. We at HCF support JSU and the brilliance of the students through our mission work and on the field constantly at The VET every year as part of our Annual HBCU Football and Recruitment Tour. We stand united with Tiger Nation.
Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune said in a letter to Arkansas AM&N College President Dr. Lawrence A. Davis, Sr.: “These days are not easy ones for those who are leaders in education. Unusual foresight, tactful approach, Christian fortitude and a high degree of able performance are required of the successful President of an institution of higher learning.”
Tiger Nation, we are with you. Continue to be strong, determined, and impactful voices of your alma mater. You will overcome this because of your continued love and pride you have for your beloved institution. You all are Tiger STRONG, and we pray for much success ahead.
