Bluefield State University Announces Finalists in Presidential Search

BLUEFIELD, WV Bluefield State University recently announced three finalists for the role of university president, following an extensive national search which began earlier this year. The university’s search committee, with oversight from the Board of Governors, has carefully reviewed numerous applications to identify candidates who demonstrate the leadership, vision, and commitment to advance Bluefield State’s mission and strategic goals.

The finalists are Dr. Vernell Bennett, former president of LeMoyne-Owen College; Dr. Atif Qarni, former Virginia Secretary of Education; and Dr. Darrin Martin, Interim President of Bluefield State University.

The on-campus interviews happened on Bluefield State’s main campus last week from Tuesday, November 12th, through Thursday, November 14th.

According to the University, the selection process began in August 2024 and involved several stages, including initial reviews and virtual interviews. Each finalist will have the opportunity to engage with faculty, staff, administrators, alumni, and students, allowing for comprehensive feedback from the university community.

This decision will mark a new era for Bluefield State University, as the chosen candidate will be tasked with continuing the university’s trajectory of growth, academic excellence, and community engagement.

Further announcements regarding the new president will follow the Board’s decision. For more information, please visit: https://bluefieldstate.edu/presidential-search/.
